Juliet was officially tired of flower wallpaper. The motels in Knoxville and Nashville had them. Now they were in Memphis and it was no better. Between that and the leaky ceilings, moldy bathrooms and stained carpets, their lodging was subpar. She slept in better digs when she turned tricks in France hundreds of years ago. She’d give about anything for one of Hades’s luxury hotel rooms at his casino.

Since they were eventually going to stay there in the next few days, maybe Hades could hook them up as a reward for calling these dumps home.

She stretched out on the bed fully clothed and ready to go. The few meager items she brought with her were already packed in the bag at her booted feet. A pile of pillows and blankets were heaped on the floor. She wasn’t kidding with Ares. If he couldn’t behave himself, he would sleep on the floor.

Speaking of the devil, he stood in the doorway of the bathroom staring at her, a towel wrapped precariously around his hips. Okay, she had to confess. He nested on the floor for half the night. She missed a warm, hard body to snuggle with. He woke up wrapped around her when the first rays of morning pierced through the slit in the motel’s curtains.

“You know we leave in twenty minutes,” she reminded him.

“That’s enough time for a quickie,” he answered her.

She ran the top of her tongue across her bottom lip. Saying that while wearing practically nothing was a temptation that was hard to beat. “You don’t know what a quickie is.”

“I can’t help it that you’re delicious and I always want more.”

“Get dressed, please. I won’t have us be the reason we’re late. One more screw-up from you and you’re going back to Hestia.”

His bottom lip popped out in a full deity pout. “I am not a child.”

“Let’s prove it to the family today, huh? No more fights.”

He huffed as he turned to go back into the bathroom. “Whatever.”

She waited for the lock to click before she crawled off the bed. She searched through the comforter for any of his clothes or shoes. Whatever she found was shoved into his satchel. Once she scoured the entire room, she zipped his pack closed and tossed it next to hers on the bed.

The two men looked at each other for a couple of seconds before they scrambled to their feet to follow her. If anyone was going to start, it would be her. She took no shit from anyone.

As the area around them got darker, the corner became surprisingly lighter. There was a young woman with hair redder than the Formoir’s. She hardly had a stitch of clothes on her body, which was arched provocatively from where she balanced on the top of the table she sat on. A single broken button barely kept her shirt wrapped around her ample breasts. Her Daisy Dukes were more of a thong than denim.

How she didn’t topple off of the tabletop was beyond Apollo. No human could have done what she was doing and stay injury-free. She was surrounded by men and women seated on benches and chairs. They each held a mesmerized grin on their faces. However, they all kept their hands to themselves despite the lust rolling off her.

She also seemed to be the source of the glow that was illuminating the area. Was it getting a little warm in here?

Deidre approached the woman like she was in a trance. Finally, she spoke. “I have a question.”

The lady in practically nothing slowly turned her head to look at Deidre like something from a horror movie. A blood-curdling scream escaped her lips, one that sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Apollo could have sworn her head did a full rotation from her neck a couple of times before she hopped off the table. She streaked past them, still howling and splitting everyone’s eardrums. As she did, she reached out for Deidre’s hand with hers.

Now there were two women shrieking in the bar. Despite seeming to be in pain, Deidre was on her heels out the door into the street. Before Apollo could grab Khalil to follow, his lover gripped his jacket and hauled the god with him.

When they reached the street, they found Deidre standing alone in the middle of it. She stared at something down the road while gripping her hand to her chest. In the distance, the figure of someone on a bike faded away.

“Deidre, are you okay?” Apollo questioned.

Deidre turned to him, her eyes wide as if she had been shaken from a trance. “It’s a long shot, but I think I know where we should start.”

Deidre gave Apollo a look, her eyes wide. The god didn’t have to ask why. “I will go with him before he gets himself killed.”

“Thank you.”

He hopped to his feet and followed Khalil. He glanced back at Deidre. She sat alone, her delicate hands wrapped around a mug and an anxious expression on her face. She stared into space like she was trying to figure it all out.

Before he could make it on a stool, Khalil was already striking up a conversation with a grizzled, gray haired biker with a beard to his chest.

“I’m looking for a woman,” Khalil began.

The man cocked an eyebrow at him. “What kind of woman?”

Khalil sat back a bit on his perch like he was stunned. He surveyed the room for a moment then leaned back in like he was about to tell the biggest secret he had. “A little taller than you, long brown hair, has an attitude.”

The man nodded as he stroked his beard as if he was in thought. “Do you like freckles? I’ve got someone in mind. She charges a lot though. I hope you have cash. Trust me, she’s worth it though.”

Khalil turned enough to grin at Apollo. “See, this wasn’t so hard.” He turned back to his new friend. “I have cash. Point me in her direction so I can take her home.”

“Nope.” Apollo stood and grabbed the djinn by the back of his jacket. He hauled him to his feet. “Thanks, but we are actually not interested.”

“But we found her,” Khalil protested.

“No, we didn’t.” Apollo nearly dragged him back to their table. Once they got there, he kicked the chair out. As gentle as he could, he nudged Khalil into it.

“I can’t believe you took me away from that.” Khalil threw his hands up in disbelief. “We were so close.”

“The dude was talking about a hooker, love, not my sister.” Apollo thumbed towards the djinn as he turned his attention to Deidre. “Can you believe what he almost did?”

Deidre didn’t acknowledge him. Her gaze was laser focused to a dark corner of the tavern.

“Deidre?” the god asked.

She stood then kicked her own chair back to get out of her spot. There was clearly a mission in her steps. “I have a hunch.”
