Well, this was it.

Freddy stared at the squat metal sided pole building in front of him. Each window glowed with a neon beer sign. The outside of the establishment was lined with motorcycles of every shape and size. He could hear the music and shout across the street where the family stood.

He glanced beside him. His beautiful bride and the rest of the relatives straddled their own bikes in a line ready to park. Some of them, like him, figured out how to handle the machine between his legs. Others, primarily Poseidon, Apollo and Khalil, had to use their power to fake it.

This was a bad idea. A really, really horrible plan.

“So, should we go in?” Mack suggested.

“Do you want to get beat up that bad?” Freddy countered.

“I’m always up for a fight.” Ares kicked off the ground and drove into the lot.

“Thanks for deciding for us, bro,” Athena shouted after him.

The rest of the family followed him, finding a place to park their motorcycles near the back of an empty field. It might have been beneficial being so far from the bar. They could make a quick getaway when all hell broke loose. With Ares in the lead, that was bound to happen.

Freddy took the rear with Demeter as they strode with purpose toward the structure. They were all ready to play the part of a tough biker gang from the moment their feet hit the ground. However, for a few brief moments, he was going to enjoy his wife.

He brushed her long, dark hair from her shoulder, noticing a silvery streak that wove through it. “You are beautiful, you know that. Right?”

He saw her grin even though her gaze was locked on the metal shack. At this point, they could clearly understand the lyrics to the blaring country song that was playing inside. “You noticed the gray hair, didn’t you?”

“What gray hair?”

“You’re funny. Your kids are doing that to me, you know that. Right?”

“My children are angels. Maybe your children are doing that to you.”

“Freddy, baby. They are the same kids.”

“Gray or no, you are an exquisite beauty.”

“You are such a smooth talker. If you like gray hair so much, maybe I should take my previous form on again. Remember her?”

“I fell in love with her. So yes, I do remember.”

“I still don’t understand why. But I’m not going to question it.”

Artemis took a couple of steps backwards then lowered herself down onto the bed. She did it with the grace and stealth of a panther on the hunt. She never broke her gaze from his. “I suppose so.”

Michael tilted his head as he took her in. “Since we are spending this quality time together, tell me a little about yourself.”

She rolled her eyes. “You haven’t ever picked up a Greek mythology book?”

“Do you remember my former line of work? We didn’t really keep tabs on you guys. I do know that, according to some fancy statues I’ve seen, you usually wear a short skirt, not black leather.”

“That’s a chiton.” He could see her lips struggle to keep from smiling. “Idiot.”

Michael shrugged. “You may have hit the nail on the head with that one. So, why the change?”

Artemis pulled her eyes from him and looked away. “No real reason.”

“Come on, princess. Swallow your pride and talk to me. I’m the only one you’ll be seeing for a while. You might as well trust me.”

There was another annoyed eye roll but she still kept her gaze to the wall and not on him. “My father decided to boot all of us out of Olympus. He thinks humans are clever for developing technology and stuff so he wants us all to experience it. Except, not all of us have anything to do with it. I’m the goddess of wild animals, the hunt, the moon, and good girls who don’t mess with guys. What technology is involved with that is horrific. So, I found a place in the woods where I can be surrounded by my creatures and hide away from the rest of the messy world.”

“With your motorcycle, which is technology.”

She turned to scowl at him. At least he had her attention again. “How do you know that I have a motorcycle? Did you stalk me?”

“No.” Michael pointed out of the prison door. “You’re dressed like them. They like to think that they are a biker’s gang.”

Artemis shrugged nonchalantly at his answer. “My bike and my phone are all the technology that I have. I like to ride and I have to keep in touch with my family, especially my brother. Yes, we’re deities. The cell phone can be a handy tool when we need it.”

Michael chuckled. “I bet you watch cat videos on it, don’t you?”

He could see her cheeks tinge pink in the very little light in the room. “Shut up. You are annoying.”

Michael stormed through the cavern, ignoring the terrifying noise around him. When he first joined Typhon and his minions, the screeching gave him nightmares. Nothing he had experienced before compared to it.

Now, it was just background chatter. Well, except for the hissing. That was new. It had to be some pretty brave snakes to live on a mountainside with a horde of demons. The heat alone should have driven them out.

He didn’t stop his stride until he was enveloped in the chilly air of the prison. With one last swing of his foot before he stopped, he gave the stool that Belphegor was perched on a swift kick. The wood bounced a couple of times between the metal of the bars and the stone wall before it splintered.

“Are you that happy to see me again, huh?”

Michael raised his gaze to Artemis. Just moments ago, the goddess had been vulnerable to him. She acted like she believed in him.

Now she stood, her face stone cold and emotionless. Her arms were crossed over her chest. Had her powers not been suppressed, he’d probably be turned into a chipmunk by now.

He turned to her and mimicked her, leaning against the wall for support. It seemed that they did this often to each other. “Bad news, Your Excellency. I get to watch over you exclusively from now on.”

She smirked at him. “You’re an improvement from that last dude. Not by much, but you are.”

“Not sure if I should take that as a compliment.”

“Take it however you want.”

Michael fought back the grin that tried to spread across his face. Her sudden icy demeanor didn’t change his heart. He was still her protector. That was until she could protect herself.

“How did you get demoted to taking care of me again?” she queried. “A bit ago, you couldn’t run fast enough to get away from me.”

He shrugged. “Lucky I guess.”
